Heavy fog greeted runners for the Barnsley 10K on Sunday. Held on a slightly modified course to previous years, with the start now in Royston Park and the finish on the road outside the Civic Hall.
As the field left the Park, it was David Thompson of the promoting club Barnsley A.C at the front with Martin Sanders (Rothwell Harriers) on his shoulder. Thompson has been the one to watch in recent weeks having taken wins at Sandal Castle and the Woodland Challenge, but Sanders wasn’t letting him have it all his own way.
As the leaders hit the final climb it was Sanders who emerged from the fog first, working hard on the climb he had enough in hand (though would have struggle to see his rival in the closing stages in such poor visibility) to take the win in 33 mins 26 secs, Thompson was second in 33:47, with Stuart Maycock third in 34:52.
Calli Thackery (Hallamshire Harriers) was a comfortable winner in the Ladies race in 37:16, with Barnsley Harriers having a successful day with Kaeti MacKenzie second in 38:41 and Pauline Griffin third (39:44).
