Saturday saw the annual Cake Race, promoted by Saddleworth Runners. Despite the move from October, strong winds once again hampered runners.
Jason Williams (Charnwood AC) and Paul Green (Sale Harriers) set the early pace and had already opened up a lead on the field by the top of the first climb. These two continued to pull away over the moors, before Williams started to pull clear as they came up past the golf course. Green couldn’t close the gap and had to settle for second, with Kieran Hodgson (Holmfirth) third. Sally Newman (Calder Valley) dominated the women’s race from the start for a comfortable win, Laura Davison (West End Runners) finished second, with Claire Wightman of the host club third.
