Denby Dale Travellers held their annual 6-mile road race on Sunday, run in bright sunshine, but with a cold wind to stop runners thinking spring had come early. David Thompson (Barnsley AC), winner in 2009 (the 2010 race was cancelled due to snow), soon took the lead.
By the two-mile mark he was running clear on his own, with only Richard Anderson (Holmfirth Harriers) able to keep him in sight. Joseph Mann (Penistone FPR) and Paul Stevenson (Pudsey & Bramley) were close together a further 40 seconds behind. The climbing, over the first mile, was clearly having an effect and the rest of the field were coming though in ones and twos. In the Lades race, Kaeti MacKenzie (Barnsley AC) was well clear of her rivals, with Amy Green (Keighley & Craven) and Jacqui Khoueiry (Holmfirth Harriers) separated by only a hand full of seconds.
By four miles, with most of the climbing over, Thompson was still holding a comfortable lead over Anderson. Stevenson had moved past Mann, but the two were locked together and third place was still up for grabs. MacKenzie had doubled her lead to 80 seconds, with Green and Khoueiry holding a small advantage over Lesley Leggett (Denby Dale).
In the closing miles Thompson made the most of the downhill and increased his lead to repeat his win of 2009 in a time of 33:34. Anderson, no doubt tired after a tough race the previous day, finished in 34:53. Mann (36:15) got the better of Stevenson (36:27) on the downhill run to the finish. The Ladies race
