Matthew Pierson (Holmfirth Harriers) repeated his win of 2011 at the Huddersfield 10K on Sunday. Running from the front from the gun with only Phill Taylor (Bridlington Road Runners) and Jack Simpson able to follow in the early miles as the field climbed up to Netherton for the first time. Pierson’s club mate Kath Farquhar led the women’s field though with a comfortable lead over her rivals.
By 5 miles Pierson held a narrow led over Taylor after the steep decent into Armitage Bridge, but on the fast run into the finish Pierson pulled away to take the win (his third in the last 6 years) in 34 mins 12 secs. Taylor’s second place (34:35) was never in doubt, with Simpson third in 35:10. Paul Smith (Holmfirth Harriers) held off Kev Lilley (Sheffield RC) for fourth, with Lilley first vet home in fifth. Holmfirth took the team honours.
In the Ladies race Farquhar was a comfortable winner in 41:15, Emma Wolff (Penistone FPR) held off Jacqui Khoueiry (Holmfirth Harriers) for second in a tight race for the minor places, with only 18 seconds covering second to fourth. Holmfirth took to team honours to round off a very successful race for the local club.
