A record field gathered for the Meltham 10K in Huddersfield on Sunday. Runners were greeted with a cool, overcast morning for the race on a tough hilly course by most standards. With the absence of last year’s winner (warm weather training) and many other local club runners (Northern XC the day before), it was left to the Vets to lead the way.
A small group formed from the start; with race regular Kevin Lilley (2009 Winner) leading a group of seven as they hit the first climb. By half distance the group had broken up with Michael Hunt (Trafford AC) holding a 10 second lead over Lilley (Sheffield RC) and Mark Hall (Barnsley AC). Hunt continued to steadily increase his lead all the way to the finish, with Lilley dropping Hall on the long drag on the back of the course to finish second, Hall held onto third, with Kevin Ogden (Spenborough AC) 4th and Rob Dewhurst (Liverpool Harriers) 5th.
In the Ladies race Karen Pickles (Pudsey Pacers) maintained a small advantage over 2010 Winner Julie Buckley (Penistone FPR) throughout the race, with 2008 Winner Joanna Seymour (Hallamshire Harriers) third.
