Huddersfield New College played host to Round 6 of the Yorkshire Summer Cyclo Cross Series, with a warm evening, conditions were ideal for racing.
First to get under way were the Under 14’s, with a field of over 40, these races are as popular as ever. With Holme Valley Wheelers duo and series leaders Lewis Byram and Amira Mellor missing, it was a chance for others to gain valuable points.
Pedalsport, Kirklee’s Cycling Academy and local club Huddersfield Star Wheelers all had a healthy number of riders in action, but in the end it was Wakefield Junior Tri club rider Jacob Feetham who ran out the winner from Pedalsport’s Jenson Young and KCA rider Mason Hollyman. In the girls race Nicole Stiff (Pedalsport) took the honours from Ava Oxley (Wakefield Tri) and Felicity Gledhill (Planet X)
In the Men’s race much of the pre-race talk was about the presence of Nick Craig (Scott UK). But when the gun went, Richard Thackray (Paul Milnes RT) was the first to hit the front, closely followed by Mike Young (Pedalsport) and Jonathan Limebear (Batley CC/Hargreaves Cycles), with the main favourites sitting close by, including Ian Taylor (Craven Energy Tri/Jedi Cyclesport) who’d made a faster start than normal.
Nick Craig’s start had left him just outside the top 10, but he soon made up the lost ground to form a leading group of three with the usually suspects, Jack Clarkson (Pedalsport) and Ian Taylor.
The three worked together for much of the race, until Taylor’s cassette took a liking to some of the course tape and he lost contact changing bikes. Craig pulled clear in the closing stages to end Clarkson’s clean sweep in the series this year, with Taylor a comfortable third despite his mechanical issues, Richard Binks (Holme Valley Wheelers) continued his run of form with fourth.
In the Ladies race, Nikola Butler (Pedalsport) took a close race from Renee Saxton, with Kate Johnson third.
