Race 3 in the West Yorkshire Cross Country League, sponsored by The Complete Runner, was held in Huddersfield on Saturday. After a week of heavy rain the going was always going to be hard (and rather muddy) for the 600 plus runners taking part in the various age groups.
First off were the races for Under 11’s and it wasn’t long before the mud was flying.
Noticeable performances on the day came from Ethan Hussey, Lucie Hall and Joshua Dickinson who all led from the start, with a very impressive run coming from Libby Shepherd who opened up a comfortable lead after making her way though the field after the start. There were also wins for Lewis Byram, Olivia Sykes, James Hall and Zara Knappy.
By the time the Senior Ladies started the course was largely a sea of mud, clearly favouring the stronger runners. With a number of regulars in action elsewhere it was Sarah Kemshall (Scunthorpe) who led up the first climb on Lap one, closely followed by Jo Buckley (Bingley Harriers) with Holmfirth duo Helen Berry and Helen Fines not far behind. As the race went on it was Berry who closed the gap on the leaders and then moved clear to take the win on home soil, with Fines getting past Buckley in the sprint for the finish. Holmfirth took the team honours, with Pudsey & Bramley second and Skyrac third.
The Men’s race was once again dominated by Leeds City with Alan Buckley the winner from Longwood’s Ian Mitchell – the two clear of third place Mike Burrett (Leeds City). With 6 runners in the first 10 home, Leeds were the clear winners in the team event. Wharfedale were second and Halifax third.
